Used Restoration Hardware Furniture Still More Expensive than Building Furniture from Scratch

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Ana White is taking the do it yourself woodworking industry by storm, leading women, the newest and fastest-growing population in carpentry, with her furniture patterns in a peer-to-peer carpentry community.

"Saving money building furniture instead of buying it is usually what draws people to the site, " says White. “But they get hooked when they discover they can save thousands off retail prices. Even used Restoration Hardware furniture costs more than building a similar one yourself. "

Not satisfied with her hobby of refurbished and painted furniture, White decided to build her own furniture from scratch using power tools. She started blogging at the end of 2009 to share her latest pieces, never expecting that within 12 months her readership would explode to 500,000 monthly visitors and two million monthly impressions, surpassing ten million pageviews in the first year alone.

The vast majority of her readers are female, but she has become a tough competitor against established woodworking websites like Lumberjocks. Her blog snagged national media's attention and has been featured in Woman's Day, Fresh Home, Popular Woodworking and Home Design, as well as newspapers around the U. S. and many prominent websites, such as HGTV and Apartment Therapy.

"This site is unique because the furniture is built by a woman for women, " says White, who has used Pottery Barn furniture as inspiration for many of her free project plans.

The majority of White's furniture builds only require a few basic tools like a circular saw, drill, counter sink drill bit and the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig. Plans are organized from beginner to advanced and include a list of materials and cuts, along with illustrated step-by-step instructions.

"You can spend hour looking for a discount West Elm headboard and bed frame, or you can make your own for much, much less in about the same amount of time, " she says.

White's first blog post was a farmhouse bed built for $80. The bed was inspired by a Pottery Barn farmhouse bed, retailing for more than ten times that. White also built a farmhouse table from reclaimed wood and spent $10 on the entire project. A comparable piece at a major furniture store retails for $3,000.
