Bentley Chief Confirms Luxury SUV Production

British luxury carmaker Bentley Motors will soon be building its own SUV. The Crewe based Bentley Motors renowned for building luxury sedans such as the Continental GT and the Mulsanne will soon enter the SUV Segment according to its new chief Wolfgang Duerheimer.

Wolfgang Duerheimer said Bentley Motors was developing a new SUV that would counter competition from the BMW X5, Range Rover and the Mercedes M-Class. Bentley is following fellow Volkswagen Group member Porsche in building a luxury SUV.

It can be recalled that Porsche had shocked fans by building the Cayenne SUV. Not only was the Porsche Cayenne successful it is now Porsche's highest selling model.

Bentley Motors is surely looking at a similar success story with its SUV. Bentley has seen its sales collapse from over 10,000 units in 2007 to about 5,000 units in 2010. The global economic crisis has contributed to the sales decline. While the recently launched new Continental GT is garnering good sales, a Luxury SUV from Bentley will definitely add to its line-up.

According to rumours the Bentley SUV will be built on the same platform as the Porsche Cayenne. Although the new Bentley SUV will be produced only by 2013, it has already created lot of buzz in the internet. While some have said the Bentley SUV will rival the Cayenne, there are others who feel the Bentley SUV will cater to the ultra luxury market and will not challenge the Porsche Behemoth.
