Green is the colour of the season and the latest Frankfurt Motor Show proved that. Frankfurt Motor Show is one of the biggest automobile extravaganzas that is organized biennially in Frankfurt (Germany). Apart from the fashion industry, everyone else will swear to the fact that there is nothing more fashionable at the moment than going green. The automobile industry has always been the first one to jump the bandwagon. What can be more profitable than making cars that are environment and business friendly?

This astuteness of the automobile companies has pushed the envelope even further. The series of green cars showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show, not only proved the present engineering brilliance of the automobile manufacturers; but also pushed us towards a secure future. Here is our list of Top 10 Eco-Friendly Cars From The Frankfurt Motor Show 2011.

1. BMW i3

BMW certainly came up with the biggest cracker of the year. The electric BMW i3 paves the way for an entirely new way of making cars. The company will release BMW’s ‘i’ eco most probably by 2013.

2. Chevrolet Aveo

The Chevrolet Aveo was not much far behind with the promise of a green future and fuel efficiency. Chevrolet Aveo is 1.3L diesel engine car. Like most electric cars it works on start /stops which results in significantly lesser fuel consumption. The sleek and stylish Aveo sedan is equipped with the 75 horsepower, 1.3 liter turbo diesel engine. Every journalist and critic at the motor show agreed that this car is going to be the most economical four door car in Europe.

3. Fiat Panda

Another big surprise was the Fiat Panda. It may not be equipped with the best design or technology, but it is certainly greener car on the road. Start/stop has now become a trademark feature for all electric and hybrid cars and this car also offers the same. Fiat Panda is also packed with a new engine range that includes Fiat’s trick Twin Air petrol engine. All these innovations significantly reduce the carbon emission and make the car a big hit with green car aficionados.

4. Volkswagen Up

Germans have always ruled the markets when it comes to innovative engineering. The Volkswagen Up is a result of that glorious tradition. The new Volkswagen ‘Up’ is a lightweight and fuel efficient car that can give competition to some of the best in the business. But if cars are about comfort then also Volkswagen ‘Up’ packs a solid punch. In its size range, it is far more spacious than any other city car.

The Peugeot HX1 was another impressive piece of design at the show. The dynamics of its design are simply awe inspiring. The car is a bit large and plush for the electric car range.

6. Mazda CX-5

The most awaited Mazda CX-5 was finally released at the Frankfurt motor show. This car is a stylish compact SUV with enough space for five people. Mazda announced that this diesel version will average 63mpg.

7. The Smart Forvision

The show also witnessed the prototype of ‘The Smart Forvision’ manufactured by Smart. The car is equipped with some of the most advanced eco friendly innovations. Some of it is closer to production than other parts. It won’t be wrong to say that Smart is becoming Mercedes’ eco technology ‘think tank’.

8. Ford Focus

Ford was the clear show stopper with the release of 1.0-litre Focus. It will hit Europe markets next year. It is probably one of the smallest engines ever fitted to a UK family car. The car significantly cuts down on CO2 emissions and boasts of a powerful engine that produces up to 120 horse power.

9. Toyota Prius

The plug-in hybrid ‘Prius’ has been officially unveiled by Toyota in the year 2010. The 99 PS (73 kW/98hp) car has 1.8- liter petrol engine with 4.4 kWh Li-ion battery and an 82 PS (60 kW/81 hp) electric motor. The company claims the output of 136 PS (100 kW/134 hp) which will allow the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 10.7 seconds. With a top speed of 180 km/h (112mph), the Prius can go up to 23 km (14 miles) on electricity alone. The estimated fuel consumption of 2.1 L/100 km (112 mpg US / 134.5 mpg UK); which will emit CO2 of 49 g/km.

10. Mercedes F 125

The luxury giant Mercedes has also revealed its interest to mark its presence in the hybrid cars segment. The company has announced its luxury flagship model F 125 for the year 2025. This plug-in hybrid car has 10 kWh Li-suiphur battery. The fuel tank is made of hydrogen and four electric motors will give a peak output of 313 PS (230kW/308 hp). The power will enable the car to accelerate 0-100 km/h in less than 5 seconds prior to reach the top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph). The car will travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on electricity and after the activation of fuel cells; the reach will extend up to 1,000 km (621 miles).

This huge array of green cars marks the beginning of a new era. The myth that green cars are somehow a compromise when it comes to power has been busted for once and all. Most of the cars released at the Frankfurt motor show will probably hit the market by next year.
